Redrock Micro
Introduction
Red Rock started in the mini DV and indi community but after seeing what Brian and his team have produced with their Matte Box I was blown away and they have definitely graduated up to a cine level. When RR announced a $500 matte box a few months ago I was skeptical and wrote it off at that point thinking there is no way someone could pull off. Red Rock has a fair amount of different products that are spoken highly of by many. Unfortunately due to the busy schedule I had at NAB I was only able to properly evaluate their matte box so that is the product I will be giving information on.

I am still speechless about the cost to value level of this matte box. Functionally it works very well and there are more features then I could have imagined. I WILL definitely be getting myself one. There is no matte box at even 5 times the price that can even come close to touching it.

Is it an ARRI? No! But overall it is very very good and at a price that I would not have even thought would be possible to sell a matte box for. The thing that impressed me the most was Brian’s open attitude and goal to consistently improve the matte box by listening to his customers.

Brian explained to me that Red Rock is here to stay and that they are looking to gain a market share with strong products at a good price that will constantly be improved upon. From what I saw, I believe Brian will not sit back until his products reach the ARRI/Vocas quality level at a fraction of the price. Considering this MB was Red Rocks first kick at the can I was nothing short of speechless at what they created and I can confidently say that no experienced camera person could even come close to guessing how low cost this unit is.

Treated properly this matte box should easily last 3 or more years of heavy use. In fact I plan to get 10 years out of mine and see no reason why it would not last that long. The key to having your gear last a long time is knowing exactly how to properly use all the features. If you do not know what you are doing cine accessories can be very easily broken. When I get my Red Rock matte box I plan to do a video of it, like I did with the Element Technica gear, that will show how to get the most out of it and what to watch for to help keep it in tip top condition. For those steadi guys out there you will be happy to hear that I took the MB over to the action cam rig booth and the Red Rock MB balances and works well with it.
